Welcome to this 21st year of Low Flutes Retreats!

Huntsville Alabama is the location of a Low Flutes Retreat in April 2025. All skill levels of alto, bass and contrabass players are welcome. We will be playing low flutes choir pieces, including Maro originally for the Armenian duduk from the 15th century, a Japanese-inspired piece Frog on an Old Tile by Carey Blyton, Dreaming by Julie Stone and either Voices from the Deep or Canticum Orbis Terrae from Alchemy of Earth by Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda. Everyone will be assigned a chamber music piece.

First meeting: 7:15 PM on Thursday, April 3rd at the hotel.

Retreat ends: Sunday at @ 8:30 PM after a group dinner.

RETREAT DETAILS:

  • Dates: Thursday, April 3rd  7:15 PM through the Sunday, April 6th concert that ends at about 5:00 PM. Fun group dinner lasts until 8:30 or so on the 6th!
  • Tuition: $415
  • Registration Deadline: Friday, February 28th.
  • Sunday Public Performance: 4:00 to 5:00 The concert is free. Don’t know where yet.
  • Required Workshop Books: Seven Steps to Better Intonation, the Alto Method and/or the Bass Method.  Buy/bring both Methods if you have an alto and a bass and want to work on both. Contra players bring the Bass Method. The books are available from chrispotterflute.com, Flute World, world-wide via Amazon, Flute Specialists, Carolyn Nussbaum’s, The Flute Pro Shop, West Valley Music, Flute Center of New York and Just FLutes (UK).
  • Private Lessons:  Will be taught Thursday the 3rd between 10 AM and 5 PM at the hotel.

Workshops – Workshop topics will be Intonation and Alternate Fingerings. The Intonation Workshop starts with Step 1 of Seven Steps to Better Intonation. Step 1 is an online assessment with Chris prior to the Retreat of how well you know your instrument at this point in time. At the Retreat we will learn how and when to make adjustments. The Alternate Fingerings Workshop will show you what fingerings can help with tonal response, how to make playing the footjoint notes easier and options for third octave intonation problems.

Evening Events –  Thursday night we will start at 7:15 PM at the hotel and read through our full ensemble pieces. Friday night is a recital featuring advanced players who have asked to play solos/duets/trios. Saturday evening is a group sight-reading session. More details below. Sunday we will have a group dinner at an area restaurant.

Repertoire – Maro originally for the 15th century Armenian duduk,  Frog on an Old Tile by Carey Blyton, Dreaming by Julie Stone and either Voices from the Deep or a movement from IMG_1552Alchemy of Earth by Alexandra Molnar-Suhajda. Everyone will also be assigned a chamber music piece.  After the February 28th registration deadline, I will know who is playing what instrument at what ability level. Then I can assign and send parts. The pieces will be performed on Sunday starting at 4 PM.

Thursday Sight-Reading Session – All participants are invited to bring a few ensemble pieces for the reading session that are scored for altos, basses and optional contras. You are responsible for making extra copies of parts and conducting your piece if it has more than three parts. Pieces with parts for both altos and basses are preferred, but c flute duets/trios/quartets can work for all altos, all basses, or all contras.

Informal Recital – On Friday night of the Retreat there will be an opportunity for the advanced players to perform a solo or other chamber music piece. There is no piano available. Sign up on the Registration form.

Private Lessons – If you are interested in a private lesson, check the lesson box on the registration form and include an $90 payment with your tuition.
