Dr. Christine Potter has performed in London, Paris, Mexico City, Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Washington D.C., and many other cities in the U.S. She is an internationally recognized alto and bass flute virtuoso and has performed at many conventions of the National Flute Association (NFA) as well as British Flute Society conventions. Chris was the first of Chair of the NFA’s Low Flutes Committee, and her CD Flute Menagerie features solo works for alto and bass. She has commissioned and premiered many works for alto and bass and organized an International Low Flutes Festival in 2018 attended by people around the world. 2019 will be her 15th year of organizing Alto and Bass Flute Retreats and her sixth year directing a low flutes choir at the Galway Festival in Switzerland. She has many published books through American and British publishers and her Alto and Bass Flute Methods are available through Amazon.

Chris is the author of 19 published books, including award winners Three Vocalises for alto or bass and piano, an Alto Flute Method, a Bass Flute Method, the Alto and Bass Flute Resource Book, a Vibrato Workbook and Halloween Duets, now part of Fun Flute Duets. Her Alto and Bass Methods are available through Amazon in the US, Canada and all European countries. 2019 will be the 15th year Chris has organized an annual Alto and Bass Flute Retreat. This is a four-day event of chamber music, low flutes choir, workshops, sight-reading and net-working with people from all over the U.S.
She is organizing an Alto Flute Artist Competition for the NFA to take place in 2019, and a second International Alto Flute Competition to take place in Japan in 2020.
Chris organized an International Low Flutes Festival which took place near Washington, D.C. in April 2018. 375 people from such places as Turkey, Japan, Iceland and Australia attended three days of events.
Chris was the first Chair of the NFA Low Flutes Committee; she and her committee compiled lists of recommended repertoire for alto and bass flute that can be found on the NFA website. Chris is contacted regularly by people all over the globe for advice about alto and bass flute, its repertoire, recommended brands, and solutions to problems with the instruments.
In addition to being Chair of the NFA Low Flutes Committee, Chris has served in other substantial positions, including:
- President and treasurer, Colorado Flute Association
- Member (five years), NFA Pedagogy Committee, which compiled Repertoire Guide for the NFA’s 6000+ members
- Assistant Program Chair, 2007 NFA convention
Chris has appeared on the cover of Flute Talk magazine in with the 10-foot high sculpture of a bass flute in her front yard. She is a frequent contributor to Flute Talk as well as Flute Focus and The Quarterly, the magazine of the National Flute Association.
She has also written and arranged numerous pieces and teaching materials. Halloween Duets and The Alto and Bass Flute Resource Book and her Vibrato Workbook and Bass Method were all winners in the National Flute Association’s Newly Published Music Competition. Her newest publication, Three Vocalises for alto or bass and piano, is published by Falls House Press and contains pieces by Ravel, Rachmaninoff and Faure. It was also winner in the NFA’s Newly published music competition.
Chris is known for her clever and innovative performances. She has organized concerts in planetariums, recorded a soundtrack in sea caves from a kayak for an improvised bass flute solo titled SplishSplash!, includes a movie in her performance of Lunar Mural 1, and organizes audience participation, including sing-a-longs.
Chris holds an annual Alto and Bass Flute Retreat every summer. In 2019 the 15th annual retreat will be held in Boulder, Colorado. The retreat’s focus is chamber music; duets, trios, quartets, and quintets for low flutes.
Chris has a Doctorate in Flute Performance from SUNY Stonybrook where she studied with Sam Baron. Her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees were with Fulbright scholar Frank Bowen at the University of New Mexico. She has also attended numerous masterclasses of Marcel Moyse and William Bennett.
